Never at a loss for words or thought, the Deep Thinkers—hailing from the sometimes underappreciated Kansas City—have come to bring Mid-West Hip Hop out of deep obscurity. With beats that bludgeon your bones the way old bass strings smash through the air and lyrics as meaningful and relevant as anything since the NY Times, the Deep Thinkers are definitely conscious of their art. And you should be too. The “nod-yo-head” rhythms and jazzy tones will have you thinking about the music for a while. But while your head is dealing with the lyrics, you can still check out what the Deep Thinkers had to say to Over/Under in this recent Q&A:

OU:  First and foremost, who are the Deep Thinkers?
DT: Brother of Moses and Leonard Destroy

OU:  So how did the Deep Thinkers get together?
DT: Back in ‘95 through graff.

OU:  Where does the name Deep Thinkers come from?
DT: We thought of the “Big Pimps,” then the “Big Ballers.” We were neither, so we went with “Deep Thinkers” since we kick back withthe cholly and get lost in thought. OU:  Sounds like you’re staying true. Sounds good, just like

the album “Necks Move.” It’s pretty smooth record (at least to me), kind of jazzy.  Any particular inspiration for your sound?
DT: All kinds of music jazz, blues, reggae, hip-hop, electronic, dancehall… a wide range. We like a lot of stuff.

OU:  Seeing as how hip-hop has grown into many “forms;” where do you see your music, and hip hop in general, going in the near and distant future?
DT: We’re taking good music into the future giving hip hop a new out look and platform.

OU:  Anything in particular any of you guys listen to?  Any artists you think need to be heard (other than your wonderful selves)?
DT: Everybody in Kansas City!
OU:  Not enough people are hearing enough of what’s coming out of KC.

OU: So how would you guys describe hip hop, your music, and your art?
DT: Beautiful, innovative & insightful.

OU:  Any closing remarks? Any last wishes?
DT: World Peace!
